FoundingTheodor Herzl convened 200 delegates from 17 countries in Basel, Switzerland, founding the World Zionist Organization with the stated goal of establishing 'a home for the Jewish people in Palestine secured by public law.'
- Herzl wrote in his diary: 'At Basel I founded the Jewish State. If I said this out loud today I would be answered by universal laughter. In five years perhaps, and certainly in fifty years, everyone will perceive it.'
